My image is refused

The editor refuses an image for one of four reasons only, and the message tells you which. Here is what each one means.

The editor checks every image before accepting it, so that a site does not become too heavy to load on a mobile connection. The message shown always names the exact cause.

“The image exceeds the maximum size”

Your file weighs more than 4 MB. Photos taken with a recent phone often exceed that limit.

  • On Android, open the photo in Gallery, then “Edit” and “Resize”.
  • On iPhone, send the photo to yourself over WhatsApp then download it back: it comes out lighter.
  • A screenshot of the photo shown full screen also gives a lighter file.

“Format not supported”

Only JPG, PNG and WebP are accepted. PDF files, HEIC files (unconverted iPhone photos) and scanned-document images are refused. Open the file and save it as JPG.

“The image is too large”

This is not about weight but about dimensions: 6000 maximum per side. It mostly affects images downloaded from stock libraries at very high resolution.

“The image could not be processed”

The file is probably damaged, or its upload was interrupted. Try once more; if the message returns, try another image to confirm the file itself is the problem.

Avoid An upload cut short by a connection drop produces this same message. On an unstable connection, send your images one at a time rather than in batches.

If every image is refused whatever it is, this is no longer a file problem: write to the Support Centre quoting the message shown.
