The request almost always arrives from the small end: a socket to add, a light to move, a breaker that trips too often. It looks trivial. It is not, because an electrical installation is a whole: what you add in one place is protected — or not — somewhere else.
Why everything starts at the consumer unit
The distribution board is the only place where the installation can be seen as a whole rather than through the socket causing trouble.
You read there what exists: which circuits are present, how they are protected, whether there is room left, whether the ways are labelled, whether successive jobs have been done without any overall logic. You also read what is missing, and that is often more important.
That is why a professional starts there, even when the request concerns a distant room. Answering a one-off request without having looked at the board amounts to working without knowing what you are connecting to.
The diagnosis: a report, not an impression
An installation is not judged by eye or by how the client feels, and the outcome of a check should not be a spoken sentence.
A serious diagnosis produces a written document listing the defects found and ranking them: what presents an immediate danger, what must be put right quickly, what can wait for a later stage. That ranking is what makes the report useful — a client who receives twenty faults with no order of priority does nothing.
It also makes the work fundable in stages, which matters when the budget does not allow everything at once: you deal first with what protects people.
That document is charged for. As in other building trades, many professionals deduct it from the cost of the work if the client goes ahead; what matters is that this is announced beforehand, not discovered afterwards.
Knowing how to refuse
This is where the trade most clearly stands apart, and it is commercially counter-intuitive.
Adding a circuit to an installation that is already saturated, or that lacks the protection meant to protect people, makes a risk worse instead of providing a service. A professional who accepts that request collects a small sum and leaves behind a situation more dangerous than before.
Refusing means explaining. Not "that's not possible", but: here is what I found, here is why adding something here is inadvisable, here is what would have to be put right first, and here is what that represents. The client remains free to call someone else; they can no longer say they did not know.
That requirement also protects the professional. Working on an installation whose defects you have reported, and documented, is not the same as adding a circuit to it and saying nothing.
What is observed, and what is measured
An article written for a general readership can describe what a professional looks at; it cannot — and must not — provide the means to do without one.
What an occupant may legitimately report: a breaker tripping repeatedly, a socket or switch that gets hot, a burning smell, black marks, a crackling sound, lights that dim when an appliance starts, a tingling sensation on touching an appliance, an exposed wire or an open enclosure. These signals justify calling someone, not opening anything.
What belongs exclusively to a qualified professional: any work inside a distribution board, any connection, any replacement of a protective device, any rewiring, any check involving energising the installation. Values, equipment characteristics and sizing rules depend on the installation, the equipment and the rules applicable in the country: they do not transfer from one home to another, and they have no place here.
The safety logic, by contrast, is the same everywhere, and it is simply stated: identify, isolate if necessary and if you can do so without risk, report, call in a competent person. The international principles applicable to work on sites — appropriate equipment, competent personnel, risk prevention — are set out in Convention No. 167 of the International Labour Organization on safety and health in construction and in the accompanying code of practice.
The labelling handed to the client
This is the trade's most useful deliverable, and the cheapest to produce.
A board where every way is identified — which breaker protects which room, which circuit feeds which use — serves the client long after the electrician has left: to isolate the right circuit before another tradesperson works, to understand an outage, to explain a problem over the phone.
To that is added a record of the work: what was done, when, on which circuit. On an installation that evolves in stages, that history spares the next professional from starting over — and spares the client paying twice for the same diagnosis.
Equipment, quotation and stages
The quotation separates labour from supplies, and states the quality of the equipment fitted. As elsewhere, cheap accessories are indistinguishable from good ones on the day of installation: they are distinguishable in use.
Where the client supplies their own equipment, the same rule applies as elsewhere: the professional's warranty then covers the installation, not the equipment. That is said at the quotation stage.
Price levels depend on the local market, the state of the installation and the scale of the remedial work: no general scale exists. Deposits, warranty and acceptance terms belong to the contract and the applicable law.
In the African context
Conditions vary sharply between countries, cities and neighbourhoods: there is no typical African electrical installation, and two neighbouring homes may present unrelated situations.
The first reality is supply quality. Depending on the area, outages, voltage variation and abrupt restorations are frequent, and they test the appliances as much as the installation itself. That shifts part of the trade towards protection and stabilisation, and makes the state of the board all the more decisive — an installation subjected to repeated shocks forgives defects less than a stable network does.
The second is the coexistence of sources. Generators, inverters, batteries and domestic solar installations have multiplied in several markets. Connecting them to an existing installation is not neutral: it raises questions of changeover, protection and compatibility that belong to a professional trained on that equipment, not to an improvised arrangement. An electrician who does not master those systems refers the client to someone who does — a sign of seriousness, not a shortcoming.
The third is the building stock. UN-Habitat's work on housing underlines how far progressive construction marks the urban stock, and electrical installations follow that movement: circuits added as needs arose, sometimes without revisiting the overall protection. That is exactly the situation where examining the board takes precedence over the original request.
The fourth is training. Many professionals learn in the course of work, alongside someone more experienced. That is a real route, and the point is not to devalue it but to structure it: what marks out a serious practitioner is what they refuse to do, what they document and what they hand over, far more than how they learned.
The fifth is professionalisation, which here is a direct economic opportunity. A written report, labelling handed over, a quotation separating labour from supplies, an invoice: these are the documents managing agents, companies, landlords and insurers ask for. Digital helps unevenly across markets — messaging allows a photograph of a board to be sent before travelling, mobile payment allows settlement without cash. The International Telecommunication Union puts the share of the world's population using the Internet at 74 per cent in 2025, with 36 per cent for Africa, the lowest of the regions it measures: a photograph helps with preparation, it never replaces opening the board on site.
What an electrician does not promise
They do not guarantee that no fault will occur on an old installation, nor how appliances they did not supply will behave, nor the stability of the network feeding the home, nor a result on part of an installation they could not inspect. They stand in neither for the electricity distributor, nor for a qualified professional on anything structural, nor for an inspection body where local regulation provides for one.
What they do commit to can be checked: an examination of the board before any work, a written and ranked diagnosis when one is requested, a reasoned refusal where the request would make a risk worse, a quotation separating labour from supplies, labelling handed over, and an invoice.
That is also what makes the business credible: a stable professional identity, verifiable references, written reports, quotations and invoices, and genuine reviews. These are documents, not tools: the form matters less than actually producing them.
Artificial intelligence can help draft a report, organise a schedule, prepare a quotation or sort enquiries. It does not see the installation, validates no arrangement, does not say whether a circuit is properly protected, replaces neither on-site measurement nor the rules applicable in the country — and must never serve as a substitute for a qualified person.
